Review about the Body writed by Steve Jones the driver of the Red and white one body!!!


REVIEW OF GRAFIL G EXTREME BODY SHELL FOR THE LOSI 5IVE 
"After working closely with filipo and davide from grafil bodies over the past six months, the new g extreme body shell for the losi 5ive t made its debut at the nook raceway in the uk national championships. Months of design and head banging between myself and grafil bodies culminated in the design and the eventual arrival of this losi 5ive specific shell.
Team kbrc ( Kendal bash and race club ) where lucky enough to be the first testers of this magnificent looking shell, and as promised a review was part of the deal.
THE SHELL ARRIVED
Again a super fast delivery from Italy duly arrived at my door, with 4 new ( prototype ) g extreme shells, all in 2mm makralon lexan, and a separate shell in a thinner 1.5mm lexan which has yet to be tested.
My first impressions of the shell where …OH MY GOD THESE ARE STRONG…, but did that mean they where going to be brittle due to there thickness, only time would tell. My other thought was how truelly aswome the shell looked even un painted. The detail on the shell especially on the side pods was by far the most detailed shell I had ever had in my hands, and yes I will admit that just because it looked good didn’t mean it was going to be good.
So now I needed to spend the next few days preparing the shell ready to fit to the roll cage.
Everyone needs to bare in mind at this stage that this shell was a PROTOTYPE , and so needed to be modded in three or four areas to make the fit perfect.
This took me an afternoon, and with a few tweeks here and there the shell was fitted to the roll cage.
These tweeks where an important part of getting the final shell finished, and with the areas I modified , these pictures where sent back to grafil to make adjustments to the final shell.
The shell at this point was still a work in progress.
The following day I proceeded to spray the shell,. Luckily enough filipo asked me if I would do the shell in a particular theme ( which made my job so much easier) he even marked the certain areas that needed painting so it was a simple case of masking up and getting the job done. Grafil bodies also supplied a bucket load of decals for me to put on the shell once fully sprayed.
Now im now expert at spraying but I must say I think I did a descent job, and by the time I had finished with the decals I stood back and looked at what had been created…and what had been created in my opinion was a totally brilliant looking shell for the losi 5ive t. Again this was purely cosmetic and bare no proof as to wether the shell would withstand the kind of abuse they usually have to put up with.
So car ready and off to the 4th round of the uk national championships.
AT THE TRACK
Myself tony and doug who are team kbrc duly arrive at trackside with 3 losi g extreme shells on our losi’s. And to say that the shells created a stir was an understatement, I lost count of the people who came over to ask what shell we where running, even guys in the 2wd classes where coming over to admire theses bodies.
And after the first morning before practice had even started we had two or three guys asking where and when can they get the shell even before they had even been run.
Again the cosmetics of these shells was making people stand up and notice, but we still needed to put the shells threw their paces.
PRACTICE TIME WITH THE NEW SHELL
The one o’clock start time for practice came, and like a ferret down a rabbit hole I was on the track, pushing the losi as hard as I could, now im usually a bad starter when it comes to tracks, and takes me 2-3 laps to feel my feet, so it was inevitable that I was going to have a tumble or two ..AND I DID !!! my first cartwheel happened of the table top, landing awkwardly and cartwheeling down the rest of the track…OUCH that’s gona damage something. Once back on all four wheels I was off again until I had engine trouble, and had to take time in the pits.
On quick inspection of the shell there was zero damage..so I continue to sort my engine problems.
After an hour or so I found the problem to the engine and proceeded to put the car and shell threw its passes. Practice can be a bit rough at times when the losi’s are on together, and this day was no different, we all pushed hard getting to grips with the track.
Back to the pits throughout the practice day I would check every part of the shell. And keep nipping over to tony and doug asking ….ANY DAMAGE TO YA SHELLS ?..., and every time the same answer…NO !
RACE DAY
Three intence heats of hard racing eventually saw me take poll position. But was struggling with pace due to having to resort back to a standard can because they deemed my exhaust too loud even tho I had run this pipe all season .
To cut a long story short I led the race for 15 minuites, taking a share of hits and rolls, but the old engine problem came back, cutting out on me 4 times through out the 30 minute race, and each time it cut out it cost me valuable time, eventually I cross the line taking 3rd place , which wasn’t bad considering how much time I lost with the problems I had.
CONDITION OF SHELL AFTER THE RACE WEEKEND
Once the finals where over team kbrc stood and looked back at the final, and took time looking at each others shells for damage. It was really expected that damage would occur, but between the three cars my shell was the only one to have any damage.
The shell had a small one inch split where the side pod wraps around the losi’s inner rear end, now I have to say that im putting this down to being my own fault. This area was something I looked at when I was modding the shell in the beginning, but decided that it would be fine, I should have listened to the little voice in my head that said TRIM 10MM FROM THAT AREA.
But all in all the shells with stood some hard rolls and hits over the weekend and came out looking as good as they did the first day we arrived.
SHELL SUMMARY
In my opinion these shells look amazing, they even make your car look fast when they are on the track…, strange but true!
THE SHELLS MAY REQUIRE A SMALL AMOUNT MODDING( EVEN WHEN THE FINAL MOULDS ARE DONE ) TO MAKE THE PERFECT FIT . but it’s a small price to pay when you see the shell finally painted and fitted to your losi
The shell is strong with just enough flex in the 2mm design to with stand most impacts, now as we all know nothing is indestructible, and im not claiming this shell is any different, we all know that if two cars have similar impacts then they both wont have the same damage, one may have more damage than the other, that’s just the way it goes. But from what I have seen of these shells upto now I can honestly say that its not just the type and thickness of lexan that prevented the damage. I am convinced that the design of the shell goes along way to helping the shell take less damage than the likes of a stock shell and some other shells on the market would …the fenders for instance have been designed so that the wheels will take more of the pain than the shell during impact…I know some will say that that’s not a good idea letting the wheels take the impact…..but where did a lot of us begin ? fg marder or baja 5b …BOTH OPEN WHEEL !!!! BOTH TAKE IMPACT AROUND THOSE AREAS, AND BOTH COULD HANDLE IT.
SUMMARY OF GRAFIL EXTREME SHELL FOR LOSI 5IVE T
Upto now I only have a few words to say about this shell.
It has surprised me from the day I unpacked it.
It looks amazing with incredible detail.
Its strong and can handle some serious pain without hospital treatment.
Would I buy one when they come on the market…my answer has to be an overwhelming yes with a capital Y E S !!!!
